Hand Beaded Pendant Necklace Showcasing Two Antique and Vintage Buttons
I live in Lancaster County Pennsylvania , where Autumn is truly at state of mind. My favorite season, with the Amish farms and river hill (Susquehanna) woods of glowing color….it’s beauty in the minor key! I chose the colors of this pendant to match the emotional feeling of deep appreciation that I feel . Colors with shades of gold and shades of magenta and tawny browns went into the choice of beading that surrounds the two beautiful buttons.
The larger button is a domed openwork brass one that is strong and well made. Inside is a sheet of metal that has a bronzy/golden shine. This button, most probably adorned a coat or jacket, and could have been manufactured anywhere from the 1920’s through the 1960’s.
The smaller button is called a Gilded or Golden Age Button (1870-1890’s). These wonderful metal buttons are strongly made, and most have lovely chased etching. In my research of these buttons, I have read that the formula for the gilt that was baked on ,contained traces of actual gold. They can be gently re-polished to a lovely soft golden shine as I have done here.
The hand beading is done with tiny glass, faceted garnet stone, faceted hematite stone, brass, and sewn on twisted metallic thread.
Two wonderful dyed fresh water pearls add balance and smooth texture.
Inside the beaded bail on top is a rolled vintage metal button!
The closure is a gold filled lobster clasp.
Measurements…The pendant width at the widest point is 1 1/4”. The length including the beaded bail connection is 2 3/8”. The side depth is 5/8”. The pendant weight is just shy of an ounce.
The necklace length is 17”.
There is a photo of the back of the pendant showing the soft ultra suede material that is very comfortable against the skin.
With fragrant notes of of cinnamon and ginger I named this piece “Spice it Up” .
Thank you for your kind interest !
